The popularity of digital gambling in Sweden continued to expand in 2025, according to a new consumer survey examining participation in online casinos and sports betting platforms. The findings indicate that approximately 18 percent of Swedish adults engaged in online casino games during the year, highlighting the growing presence of the iGaming industry within the country’s digital entertainment ecosystem.
Sports wagering showed even broader participation. Roughly 24 percent of respondents reported placing bets online over the same period. These figures demonstrate how online gambling services have become increasingly integrated into everyday leisure activities for many consumers.
The research was based on responses from 3,463 individuals, including a detailed analysis of 1,004 active online gambling participants.
Research Methodology and Participant Profile
The study focused specifically on active digital gambling users to better understand behavioral trends within the market. Among the 1,004 identified players, 501 participated in the online casino segment survey, while 503 respondents contributed to the sports betting analysis.
Data collection took place over a two-week period between July 3 and July 17, 2025. Researchers examined multiple aspects of user behavior, including preferred games, spending patterns, demographic characteristics, and familiarity with various gambling platforms.
By separating casino players and sports bettors into two distinct groups, the study provides a clearer picture of how consumer engagement differs between these verticals.
Slot Games Dominate Online Casino Preferences
Within the casino segment, slot games emerged as the most widely played product category. Nearly half of surveyed casino players—about 49 percent—identified slot machines as their primary gaming choice.
The popularity of slots can largely be attributed to their accessibility, simple gameplay mechanics, and wide availability across digital platforms. Compared with more complex casino games, slots typically require less strategic knowledge, making them appealing to both casual and experienced players.
Industry observers note that the strong performance of slot games has long been a cornerstone of the global online casino market, contributing a significant share of overall gaming revenue.
Football Leads the Sports Betting Market
In the sports wagering segment, football proved to be the dominant betting market among Swedish players. Approximately 63 percent of sports bettors reported placing wagers on football matches during the previous year.
The sport’s widespread popularity across Europe has consistently made it one of the most lucrative betting categories for online operators. Major international leagues and tournaments offer a continuous stream of betting opportunities, sustaining strong engagement from fans.

Demographic Differences Between Casino and Betting Players
The survey also revealed notable demographic distinctions between online casino players and sports bettors. Male participants were more heavily represented in the betting segment, accounting for roughly 62 percent of respondents.
Casino gaming, however, displayed a more balanced gender distribution. Male players represented approximately 55 percent of the casino segment, suggesting a broader demographic appeal compared with sports wagering.
In terms of age distribution, most respondents fell within their 30s and 40s. The majority were also employed full-time, indicating that online gambling participation is largely concentrated among working-age adults with regular income streams.
Moderate Spending Patterns Among Players
Financial engagement levels among Swedish online gamblers appear relatively controlled. Most participants reported modest monthly expenditures on gambling activities.
A significant share of players indicated spending less than SEK99 per month, equivalent to just over US$10. Another large group reported monthly spending between SEK200 and SEK999, or roughly US$20 to US$110.
Only a minority of respondents reported higher spending levels. Approximately 17 percent of online casino players and 10 percent of sports bettors said they spend SEK1,000 or more per month on gambling.
These figures suggest that, for many users, digital gambling remains a low-to-moderate cost recreational activity rather than a high-stakes financial pursuit.
Unlicensed Platforms Remain a Concern
One of the more striking findings from the study is the continued presence of unlicensed gambling platforms within the market. Around 18 percent of online casino players admitted to using sites that operate outside the country’s regulated system.
This trend highlights a persistent challenge for regulators attempting to channel gambling activity toward licensed operators. While Sweden maintains a structured regulatory framework for online gambling, offshore platforms continue to attract players through broader product offerings, fewer restrictions, or promotional incentives.
Industry analysts suggest that strengthening consumer awareness and improving the competitiveness of regulated platforms may help reduce reliance on unlicensed services.
